Ugadi - Telugu New Year On 11 April 2013
Ugadi marks the beginning of the Telugu New Year. It also brings happiness with
the onset of Vasanth Ruthu (spring). Ugadi name has been changed from Yuga Aadi
(Yuga + Aadi means beginning of New age). It is believed that the creator of the
Hindu pantheon Lord Brahma started creation on this day - Chaithra Shuddha
Prathipade or the Ugadi day. It is the most important festival for Hindus, which
falls on Chaitra Shuddha Prathipade (Padya). According to Hindu myths, Lord
Brahma created the earth and set days, nights, dates, weeks, fortnights, months,
seasons, and years to count the time.During Ramayana period, the New Year was being celebrated on the first day of Uttharayana. So, Chaitra was the 12th month. Varahamihira, a saint who lived in sixth century, started a new method of celebrating New Year on Chaitra Shuddha Prathipade. Ugadi marks the beginning of a new Hindu lunar calendar with a change in the moon's orbit. It is a day when mantras are chanted and predictions made for the new year.
Panguni Uttiram on 26th March 2013
Panguni Uttiram is a festival
celebrating celestial marriages. Lord Shiva weds goddess Meenakshi (a Parvati
incarnation) on this date. Also celebrated is the marriage of Lord Subramanya to
Theivanai, the adopted daughter of Indra. It is celebrated over a ten day period
in many temples. Inscriptions indicate existence of these celebrations as early
as that of the Chola King Rajaraja Chola. Panguni Uttiram falls on the full moon
day in the month of 'Phalguna' called Panguni in Tamil (April). The day is
considered to be specially favourable for the worship of Shiva, Perumal and
Murugan.

The Sacred Month of Karthika ( Pongala)
The Sacred Month of Karthika:
The month wherein the 'Karthika' Nakshatra is in completion is known as the month of Karthik (comes somewhere between mid November and December as per English calendar). This month is extremely sacred and is very dear to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. There is something extremely special about the sanctity of this month that draws all Shiva and Vaishnava devotees together and reinstates the unity in the Shiva - Vishnu concept. That is, all the sacred baths, lighting lamps, fasting, pilgrimages, devotional services will be devoted to and reach both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. This sacred period falls within the 'Sharad Ruthu' (Winter season), hence water is clear and cold. This period is also known as 'Hamsodakam' (Swan period).
India, the country where the Vedic knowledge originated, celebrates this whole holy period in a very special way. People take baths with pure, cold water before sunrise, and this will supposedly benefit the purity of both mind and body and also lead towards better health. Many of those who live close to rivers would even take a river bath. This is much better because the rivers waters, flowing from many forests, carry ingredients from many herbs which help towards better health. Many people at least try to avoid hot water baths during this time.
The following traditions are most commonly observed by the people who understand the importance of this period:
Dipping the right hand thumb and shaking water thrice and then pour water from the right hand palm three times
Wearing freshly cleaned dry clothes to do 'Sandhya Vandana'
Offering Prayers & deeparadhans (lamp ceremony) to Deities,
It is believed that offering 'Tulasi Dalas' (Holy basil leaves) to Lord Vishnu and 'Maredu' (or Bilva leaves) to Lord Shiva during praying time is supreme and will please them the most. So, many follow this ritual even to this day.
Fasting once in a while is considered good for health even from medical point of view. Fasting in winter is more feasible and easier than fasting in summer. It would be best if the entire family could take part together in these activities. It is supposed to increase harmony, fun and happiness in families and improve matrimonial relations.
Leave lighted lamps in the rivers and other water bodies is also considered to bring prosperity. So many Indian married women observe fasting and leave well lit lamps in rivers on certain special days like Karthika Poornima day in many parts of the country.
Another extremely special feature one would notice in temple rituals that is exclusively special is 'Jwala Thoranam'. On certain special days like Mondays, in a Shiva Temple, a large, thick rope is made from grass and lit. Under the burning grass rope, devotees along with the Deity keep moving in a swing-like motion. This is a rare sight to see and one that no one should miss. Huge crowds gather to witness this and many do participate in this event.
Many people perform Sri Satyanarayan Vratam during this time of the year. Especially, performing this on Karthika Poornimaday is considered supreme and yields best results.

in Kerala. The ritual comprises preparing ‘prasad’ for the Devi – women cook
rice and jaggery in earthen pots and they offer it to the goddess. In 2012,
Chakkulathu Kavu Pongala is on November 28. Bhagavathy or Devi is a divine
incarnation of Shakti. Chakkulathu Kavu Pongala takes place at Chakkulathukavu Bhagavathy Temple near Thiruvalla in Kerala and

KalaBhairavashtami, DEC 6th-2012
Kalashtami, or Maha kalaBhairavashtami, is the most auspicious day dedicated to Lord Kala Bhairava. Lord kala Bhairava is a manifestation of Lord Shiva. Kala Bhairava is the God of Time – Kal means 'time' and 'Bhairava' the manifestation of Shiva. Ashtami after Poornima, the eighth day after full moon, is considered the ideal day to propitiate Kala Bhairava. In 2012, Kala Bhairavashtami is on Dec 06.
Lord Kala Bhairava is also known as Kshetrapalaka, the guardian of the temple. In honor of this, keys to the temple are ceremonially submitted to Lord Kaala Bhairava at temple closing time and are received from him at opening time.
The vahana (vehicle) of Lord Kaala Bhairava is the dog. Feeding and taking care of dogs is another way of showing our devotion to Lord Kaala Bhairava.
There are eight types of Bhairavas and they are called ashta Bhairavas. They are Asithanga Bhairavar, Ruru Bhairavar, Chanda Bhairavar, Krodha Bhairavar, Unmatta Bhairavar, Kapala Bhairavar, Bhishana Bhairavar and Samhara Bhairavar. Apart from these eight forms there is yet another form called Swarna akarshana Bahiravar. Maha Bhairavar is said to be Shiva himself.
The Swarna akarshana Bhairavar has red complexion and clothed in golden dress. He has moon in his head. He has four hands. In one of the hands he carries a golden vessel. He gives wealth and prosperity.

Kaarthigai Deepam 27th NOV 2012
Kaarthigai Deepam is a festival of lights, celebrated in the Tamil month of Kaarthigai. It is celebrated on the full moon day of the Kaarthigai month which coincides with Krithikai star. It is also considered as the extension of the Deepavali festival. In some houses, they double the number of lamps every day from the day of Deepavali and this way, they end up with a number of lamps on the day of Kaarthigai Deepam.
It is celebrated in a special manner in Thiruvannamalai. Lord Shiva asks Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu to find out the exact location of his head and his feet. Since Lord Shiva takes a gigantic form, they are not able to find out anywhere. Then Lord Shiva takes the form of a jyothi (light of fire) on the hill of Thiruvannamali. Therefore, this festival is also known as Annamalai Deepam. Here, a special torch is lighted on the zenith of the hill and it is believed that Lord Shiva's jothi will be visible on this day.
Lord Muruga took the form of six babies in a lake called "Saravana Poigai". On this day, all his six forms were united by Parvathi(his mother) and this way, he had six faces. Special poojas are performed to Lord Muruga.
On this day, people clean the houses. In the evening, they draw kolams (rangoli) in the front of the house and also place some lamps on it. The lamps(Agal) are placed in the pooja and lighted. Then the Deeparathana is done in which the lamps are moved to different places in the house. The lamps glow all over the streets on this day. The lamps are arranged near the doors and windows and also in the balconies. In this way, people of Tamil Nadu celebrate Kaarthigai Deepam for three days.

Akshya trithiya 2010

It is well known that Indians believe passionately in the theory of muhurts
or auspicious times to perform sacraments, to make major purchases or
to begin new ventures. Inspite of modern technology and changing
lifeviews, this dedication to auspicious time is a prominent feature
of Indian life.
Akshaya tritiya, the third day of the bright half of Vaishakh, is considered
one of the four most sacred days of the vear, when the Sun and Moon are
in exaltation; they are simultaneously at their peak of brightness, which
happens only once every year. Every year, Akshaya tritiya falls between
April 14th and May 14th This year Akshaya Tritiya falls on May 16th 2010
on sunday.
The word Akshaya means that which never diminishes - hence beginnings
made or valuables bought on this day are considered certain to bring luck
and success. All over India people celebrate weddings, plan new business
ventures, long journeys and other events on this day. Like Diwali, Dussera
and Gudi Padva. Akshava Tritiva is reserved for buying gold, platinum, silver and
other assets. As the Sun, the lord of the planets and the Moon the lord of
creativity(sense) are exalted, the day is considered to be an auspicious
day in India. If the tritiya day falls on a wednesday or Friday when moon
is in Rohini or 4th constellation, the day becomes specially sacred.
Akshaya Tritiya, also known as "Akha Teej", is traditionally the birthday
of Lord Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The Puranas
tell how he reclaimed land from the sea along the west coast of India
by his valour. Even today Goa and the Konkan are called Parshurama
Kshetra. He then settled 96 selected families there, called Shahanavkuli
Brahmins, who are said to have created the cultural heritage of this nart
of India. People conduct special Pujas on this day, bathe in holy rivers,
make a charity, offer barley in a sacred fire, and worship Lord Ganesha
& Devi Lakshmi on this day.
The day also marks the beginning of the "SatyaYug" or the Golden Age
- the first of the four Yugas. In the "Puranas", the holy Hindu scriptures,
there is a story that says that on this day of Akshay Tritiya Vedavyas
along with Lord Ganesha started writing the great epic Mahabharata.
Ganga Devi or Mother Ganges also descended to earth on this day.
It is also believed that people born during this time shine bright in life.
Many luminaries were born during this period:
Basaveshwara born on May 4,Ramanujacharya and Adi Shankaracharya
on May 6, Swami Chinmayananda on May 8 and Lord Buddha on May 16.
Story:Whatever one does for devotees, and for Krsna that person will get
more benefit and it is eternal benefit and never lost. He said one story of
a Brahmana: there was a brahmana who had a very good wife and was
poor. Whatever little money he got would get spent somehow. Also he
did not have children. So under the strong request of his wife he went
to Vasishta muni to know the reason for his suffering. Vasishta muni told
him that in his previous life he was very rich and also had many children.
But he was very stingy, he was not even spending for his own children.
This is the reason for his being poor, also without children. Then that
brahmana asked Vasishta muni why he got a good wife. So that Muni
replied that somehow with some reason, he observed that the vrata
of Vaishaka month for the last 5 days. So he got a good wife and also
the brahmana birth. Then the muni advised him to follow at least the
last 7 days left of Vaishaka month, with devotion to Lord Krsna.Since
that brahmana observed the vrata of Vaishaka month for that at least
the left out 7 days, he got sons, he became rich, ultimately he got
Love of Godhead and went back to the spiritual world! It is important
to hear such a story/pastimes as this so that at least by hearing this,
we engage ourselves in the service of Guru, and lord Krsna.
The various homams that can be performed on that day are
1. Akshaya Tritiya Special homa homam - For the well being of
your family.
2 . Shatru shanti homa - To safeguard from ill effects and enemies.
3 . Visit Lord Balaji & Ashtalakshmi temple.
Most Panchangs in North India except for Mithila Panchang has termed Akshay Tritiya 2010 as inauspicious - it is not good for marriages and other auspicious events.

Ratha saptami on 22 Jan

Ratha saptami
People worship the sun in the early morning and recite the Surya Sahasranama.
Good actions done on this day give manifold results. People fasting on this day are said to attain knowledge and derive virtues. If widows fast on this day, they get rid of widowhood from the next birth onwards. Even the sin of slaying a person is expiated by the power of fasting on this day. He who takes a bath at the time of sunrise is purified like Mother Ganges. He can never become a poor man. This day is as powerful as Amavasai and several people offer Tharpanam to Ancestors

SRI DATTA JAYANTHI

Om Dattathreya Vidmahe
Atri putraaya dhimahi
Thanno Datta prachodhayat!
- Dattatreya Gayathri mantra
Datta Jayanti is a Hindu festival celebrated to commemorate the day of the birth of Lord Datta, that is, the day that the Datta Principle became active on earth. This festival is celebrated on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Margashirsha./On the full moon day of the Tamil month of Karthigai (Nov-DecIn ancient times there was a very rigorously disciplined rishi called Atri. He was believed to be the mental son of Brahmadev, because he had been born from the brilliance of Brahma's eyes. His wife was Anusuya, who was a very loyal, humble and faithful wife.
In heaven sage Narada used to tell the gods very interesting stories about Anusuya's loyalty to her husband. This annoyed Saraswathi, Lakshmi, and Parvati, who decided to lower Anusuya's repute. They sent the three Gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva to earth for the purpose of bringing about her disgrace.
Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva became three guests, and when Atri was not in his house, they knocked the door. Anusuya at once welcomed the guests. She got food ready for them and requested them to have a meal. Then they said that they would eat only on one condition. The strange condition was that Anusuya should serve them the food without clothes on.
Anusuya was shocked. But in a minute she thought of a solution, and by the power of her mind she turned the three guests into small babies. The babies began to cry. She kept them in a cradle and with great love she began to rock them and feed them.
There was a commotion in heaven. The three wives of the gods, Saraswathi, Lakshmi and Parvati became worried. If the three great gods become small babies, who will take the responsibility of the universe ?
Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva asked for Anusuya's forgiveness. The form of three babies kept a particle of their being in the house of that faithful wife and they returned to heaven.
Anasuya named the three babies, Som, Datta, and Durvas. When they grew up Som went to the moon, and Durvas went to the jungle to do penance. Before leaving both of them kept their particle of being with Datta. Thus Datta became the combined avatar of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
The worship of Lord Datta prevents and resolves problems of negative energy due to unsatisfied ancestors' souls.
Preparation for Datta Jayanti
This is done by worshipping Lord Datta in the following manner:
1.Meticulously following the code of conduct according to the four spiritual classes (varnas*) and stages of life (ashrams**).
2. Doing spiritual practice according to the path of Yoga and Shaktipat disksha (initiation by energy transfer).
3. Since Lord Datta is the deified Guru, He has to be worshipped in the form of the Guru Himself by repeating His Name, 'Sri Gurudev Datta'. Since Lord Datta is the Supreme Guru, the Guru-disciple tradition, in which the Guru is a human being, is not followed in the Datta sampradaya
4.Following of the rules (discipline) of the Datta sect
5.Performance of severe rituals and undergoing physical hardships
6.Strictly observing the specifications regarding clothing.
Celebration of Datta Jayanti
Ritualistic worship of Lord Datta (Satyadattapuja): This is a ritualistic worship of Lord Datta similar to the commonly performed ritualistic worship of Lord Vishnu (Satyanarayan). This is done by following the basic steps of Hindu rituastic worship, namely, cleaning the premises and the altar, cleansing oneself, and preparing the holy sacrament (prasad), etc., before the worship, performing arati of Lord Datta, distributing the sacrament among the attendees, etc. Instead of Lord Datta's statue, wooden slippers (Paduka) and the fig (Oudumbar) tree are used for His ritualistic worship.
On Datta Jayanti, seekers are advised to repeat (chant) six malas (6 x 108 = 648 times) 'Om Sri Gurudev Datta', using the marak (destroyer) tune.

Naga Panchami on 26th of july
Serpents or Naga Devatas are worshipped on Shravan Shukla Panchami also called as Naga Panchami. According to Hindu Mythology, Serpents are considered divine. People go to temples and snake pits in temples to worship the Nagas. A lot of people fast on the Panchami day and take food only in the evening. By praying the Naga Devatas one is freed from the fear of snakes and serpents and it is also believed to protect us from all evils. The person who performs worship of the serpents on Naga Panchami day should not dig the ground for farming or for any other reason.
It is on the fifth day of the bright half of the Shravan that Naga Panchami, or the festival of snakes, is celebrated in India. Snake worship, no doubt, owes its origin to man's natural fear of these reptiles. However, in Hindu culture, they own a prominent place. Hindu mythologies are filled with stories and fables about snakes, the most important being the Sheshnaga of Lord Vishnu (it is on this snake that Lord Vishnu reclines while sleeping in the sea). Thus, it is quite understandable that a festival called Naga Panchami is observed in India, in the honor of snakes, every year.Naga Panchami is one of the most ancient fasts in India and also finds mention in the Puranas. It is believed to be one of the most auspicious days of the entire year. According to the Bhavishya Purana, when men bathe the snakes Vasuki, Takshaka, Kaliya, Manibhadra, Airavata, Dhritarashtra, Karkotaka and Dhananjaya with milk, on the fifth day of the bright fortnight of Shriven, they ensure freedom from danger for their families. As per a legend, on the day of Naga Panchami, ploughing a field is forbidden. There are a number of legends associated with Naga pancahmi. One has it that on this day, while tilling his land, a farmer accidentally killed some young serpents. The mother of these serpents took revenge by biting and killing the farmer and his family, except one daughter, who happened to be praying to the Nagas. This act of devotion resulted in the revival of the farmer and the rest of his family. Since then, Nag Panchami has been celebrated in India. It is believed that in reward for worship, snakes will never bite any member of the family. There is yet another legend related to the festival. It goes that young Lord Krishna was playing with the other cowboys near river Yamuna, when the ball got entangled in the high branch of a tree. Krishna volunteered to climb the tree and fetch the ball. Below the tree, a terrible snake Kaliya used to live in the river. Suddenly Krishna fell from the tree into the water. The terrible snake came up with anger, but Krishna started jumping on its head. Finally, Kaliya said sorry to Lord Krishna and He forgave the snake and let it go free. Since then, on Nag Panchami day, the victory of Krishna over the Kaliya snake is commemorated. In India, snakes are so revered that temples have also been erected in their honor. There is a particularly famous one in Mysore, at a place called Subramania (Sheshnaga). The Naga culture was fairly widespread in India before the Aryan invasion, and continues to be an important segment of worship in certain areas. After the invasion, the Indo-Aryans incorporated the worship of snakes into Hinduism. The thousand-headed Ananta is Vishnu's couch and also holds up the earth, while snakes play an ornamental role in the case of Shiva. Naga panchami is another form of honoring the snakes.

Guru poornima
The day of full moon, Purnima, in the month of Ashadh of the hindu calender is traditionally celebrated as Guru Purnima Guru Pūrṇimā, गुरु पूर्णिमा) by hindus. On this day, devotees offer puja (worship) to their Guru.
This was the day when krishna -dwaipayana vyasa -author of the mahabharata was born. veda vyasa , did yeoman service to the cause of vedic studies by gathering all the vedic hymnsextant during his times, dividing them into four parts based on their use in the sacrificial rites, and teaching them to his four chief disciples – Paila, Vaisampayana, jaimini and Sumantu. It was this dividing and editing that earned him the honorific "Vyasa" (vyas = to edit, to divide).
"He divided the Veda into four, namely Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva. The histories and the Puranas are said to be the fifth Veda."- Brahmanda Purana 1.4.21
The spiritual Gurus are revered on this day by remembering their life and teachings.
Seekers try to get as much opportunity to do Satseva of the Guru as possible during this period. As the Guru principle is 1000 times more active during this period, when compared to any other day during this year, the satseva done on Guru Poornima fetches substantial grace of the Guru for their spiritual progress. (Ref : Sanatan Prabhat)
The relationship between the Guru and the Disciple is considered very sacred. This relationship is purely spiritual in nature and is independent of age of the two. It is based on maturity of Gyan (Spiritual Knowledge) and Sadhna (Spiritual Practice). The only awareness that a Disciple should foster is, ‘I should be uplifted spiritually’. The Guru too harbours only one thought, ‘May this Disciple be uplifted’. Relationships other than Guru-Disciple are bound by worldly restrictions wherein the ego constantly manifests itself while Gyan and other Sadhna have no value. Since these worldly relationships needs ego for its sustenance, such relationships are albeit false from spiritual level. (Ref : Sanatan Prabhat)
Celebration of Guru Poornima Day in Shirdi
The celebration of Guru Poornima began in Shirdi around 1908. One day Shri Baba told his disciple Shri Dada Kelkar, "Do you know this day is the day to approach Gurus? Bring your worship articles". Then Shri Kelkar and his friends looked up the calendar and found that the day was Guru Poornima day. They started worshipping Shri Sai Baba as their Guru, and that practice has continued till today not only in Shirdi but all over the world where prayers are offered to Shri Sai.
Guru Poornima is celebrated by devotees by performing Guru Pooja(offering prayers to the Guru) to our Lord Shri Sai Baba. Each Sai Devotee can either perform the Sai Guru Pooja(prayer) at home or attend a Sai Guru Pooja or sponsor a Sai Guru Pooja being performed at a Sai temple by offering donation or other articles used in Pooja(Pooja samagri).
One can attend a bhajan or visit a Sai Mandir where ever possible. For those of us who do not have the fortune of visiting a Sai temple or attending a Bhajan, this web site organization has teamed with Sai temples from various areas to help devotees participate in Sai Guru Pooja by sponsoring Guru Pooja.
For those who are unable to do so, humming songs about Sai or repeating Sai slokams or SaiNama would be a good way to spend Guru Poornima day.

akshaya trithiyai
It is well known that Indians believe passionately in the theory of muhurts
or auspicious times to perform sacraments, to make major purchases or
to begin new ventures. Inspite of modern technology and changing
lifeviews, this dedication to auspicious time is a prominent feature
of Indian life.
Akshaya tritiya, the third day of the bright half of Vaishakh, is considered
one of the four most sacred days of the vear, when the Sun and Moon are
in exaltation; they are simultaneously at their peak of brightness, which
happens only once every year. Every year, Akshaya tritiya falls between
April 14th and May 14th This year Akshaya Tritiya falls on 27th april 2009
on Monday.
Akshava Tritiva is reserved for buying gold, silver and
other assets.
The various homams that can be performed on that day are

your family.
2 . Shatru shanti homa - To safeguard from ill effects and enemies.
3 . Visit Lord Balaji & Ashtalakshmi temple.

Kamada Ekadashi
The Ekadashi that occurs during the lightfortnight
of Chaitra is named Kamada Ekadashi.
Itconsumes all sins.
It is very purifying, and itbestows the highest merit upon one who
faithfullyobserves it. Oh king, now hear an ancient historywhich is
so meritorious that it removes all one's sinssimply by being heard.
Katha from Varaha Purana:
Once, long ago, there was a city named Ratnapura andKing
Pundarika was its ruler. It had mostlyGandharvas, Kinnaras,
and Apsaras among its citizens.Among the Gandharvas were
Lalit and his wife Lalita, who was an lovely couple. These two
were intenselyattracted to each other. Lalita loved her husband
dearly, and likewise he constantly thought of herwithin his heart.
They were inseparable.Once, in the court of King Pundarika,
many Gandharvaswere singing, Lalit was one among them.
While singing Lalit could not help thinking about his beloved,
andbecause of this distraction he lost track of thesong's melody.
Lalit sang the song improperly, and oneof the envious snake
named kakort who was inattendance at the king's court
complained to the kingthat Lalit ws lost in the thought's of his
wife that'sbecause he lost track and sang improperly.
The kingbecame furious upon hearing this, and he shouted,
'Ohfoolish knave, because you were lustfully thinking ofa
woman instead of reverently thinking of your king as you '
performed your court duties, I curse you to at once become
a Demon !, a man-eating demon with aterrified apperance.
Lalit immediately became a fearful Demon. His arms were
eight miles long, his mouth was as big as a hugecave,
his eyes were as awesome as the sun and moon, his
nostrils resembled enormous pits in the earth, his neck
was a veritable mountain, his hips were fourmiles wide,
and his gigantic body stood a fullsixty-four miles high.
Thus poor Lalit, the Gandharvasinger, had to suffer the
reaction of his offenseagainst King Pundarika.Seeing her
husband suffering as a horrible monster,Lalita became
overwhelmed with grief. She thought,'Now that my dear
husband is suffering the effects ofthe kings' curse,
what is left for me? What should Ido? Where should
I go?' In this way Lalita grieved dayand night. Instead
of enjoying life as a Gandharvaswife, she wandered
everywhere in the thick jungle withher husband, who
had fallen completely under the spellof the king's curse.
He wandered fitfully acrossforbidding region,
a once-beautiful Gandharva nowreduced to the behavior
of a man-eater.One day, while wandering in the jungle,
Lalita met thesage Shringi . He was sitting on the peak
of theVindhyachala Hmountain. Approaching him, she
immediately offered the ascetic her respectfulobeisance's.
The sage noticed her bowing down beforehim and said,
'Who are you and why have you come here? Why you
look so gloomy. Please tell me everything intruth.'Lalita
replied, 'Oh Brahmana, my name is Lalita. Iwander in the
jungle with my dear husband, whom KingPundarika has
cursed to become a man-eating demon. Iam greatly
aggrieved to see him like this. Oh Saint, please tell me
how I can perform some act of atonementon behalf
of my husband. How can I free him from thisdemonic
form, please help me. The sage replied, 'Thereis an
Ekadashi named Kamada that occurs in the lightfortnight
of the month of Chaitra. It is coming upsoon. Whoever
fasts on this day has all his desiresfulfilled. If you observe
this Ekadashi fast accordingto its rules and regulations and
give the merit youthus earn from your fast to your husband,
he will be freed from the curse at once.'Lalita faithfully
observed the fast of Kamada Ekadashiaccording to the
instructions of the sage Shringi, andon Dvadasi she
appeared before him and the Deity ofLord Vasudeva
and said, 'I have faithfully observedthe fast of Kamada Ekadashi.
By the merit earned through my observance of this fast,
let my husband be free from the curse that has turned him
into a beast.May the merit I have gained thus free him
from his misery.'And Lalita's husband, who stood nearby,
was at oncefreed from the king's curse. He immediately
regainedhis original form as the Gandharva Lalit,
a handsomeheavenly singer adorned with many
beautiful ornaments.All this was accomplished
by the power and glory ofKamada Ekadashi. At last
the Gandharva couple boardeda celestial airplane
and ascended to heaven.
Lord Sri Krishna continued,
'Oh Yudhishthira! , anyonewho hears this story should
certainly observe holyKamada Ekadashi to the best of
his ability, such greatmerit does it bestow upon the
faithful devotee. I havetherefore described its glories
to you for the benefitof all humanity. There is no better
Ekadashi than Kamada Ekadashi. Itcan eradicate even
the sin of killing a brahmana, andit also nullifies demoniac
curses. In all the threeworlds and moreover it grants all
the wishes'.
Thus ends the narration of "Kamada Ekadashi" fromVaraha Purana.

and said, 'I have faithfully observedthe fast of Kamada Ekadashi.
By the merit earned through my observance of this fast,
let my husband be free from the curse that has turned him
into a beast.May the merit I have gained thus free him
from his misery.'And Lalita's husband, who stood nearby,
was at oncefreed from the king's curse. He immediately
regainedhis original form as the Gandharva Lalit,
a handsomeheavenly singer adorned with many
beautiful ornaments.All this was accomplished
by the power and glory ofKamada Ekadashi. At last
the Gandharva couple boardeda celestial airplane
and ascended to heaven.
Lord Sri Krishna continued,
'Oh Yudhishthira! , anyonewho hears this story should
certainly observe holyKamada Ekadashi to the best of
his ability, such greatmerit does it bestow upon the
faithful devotee. I havetherefore described its glories
to you for the benefitof all humanity. There is no better
Ekadashi than Kamada Ekadashi. Itcan eradicate even
the sin of killing a brahmana, andit also nullifies demoniac
curses. In all the threeworlds and moreover it grants all
the wishes'.
Thus ends the narration of "Kamada Ekadashi" fromVaraha Purana.
