Scientific Meaning of Gayatri Mantra

Scientific Meaning of Gayatri Mantra:

Gayatri Mantra is supposed to provide immense energy.

Women were not supposed to enchant this since they were already considered an epitome of energy. But in Kaliyug soul has no gender and hence women can enchant this mantra.

To download the audio for Gayatri Mantra (37122 KB) click here.

Gayatri mantra has been bestowed the greatest importance in Vedic dharma.
This mantra has also been termed as Savitri and Veda-Mata, the mother of the Vedas.

The literal meaning of the mantra is:
God! You are Omnipresent, Omnipotent and Almighty

You are all Light. You are all Knowledge and Bliss.
You are Destroyer of fear. You are Creator of this Universe,
You are the Greatest of all.We bow and meditate upon your light.
You guide our intellect in the right direction.

The mantra, however, has a great scientific import too, which somehow got lost in the literary tradition. The modern astrophysics and astronomy tell us that our Galaxy called Milky Way or Akash-Ganga contains approximately 100,000 million of stars. Each star is like our sun having its own planet system. We know that the moon moves round the earth and the earth moves round the sun along with the moon. All planets round the sun.

Each of the above bodies revolves round at its own axis as well. Our sun along with its family takes one round of the galactic centre in 22.5 crore years. All galaxies including ours are moving away at a terrific velocity of 20,000 miles per second. And now the alternative scientific meaning of the mantra step-by-step:

Om bhur bhuvah swah:
Bhur the earth, bhuvah the planets (solar family), swah the Galaxy. We observe that when an ordinary fan with a speed of 900 RPM (rotations Per minute) moves, it makes noise. Then, one can imagine, what great noise would be created when the galaxies move with a speed of 20,000 miles per second. This is what this portion of the mantra explains that the sound produced due to the fast-moving earth, planets and galaxies is Om. The sound was heard during meditation by Rishi Vishvamitra, who mentioned it too their colleagues. All of them, then unanimously decided to call this sound Om the name of God, because this sound is available in all the three periods of time, hence it is set (permanent). Therefore, it was the first ever-revolutionary idea to identify formless God with a specific title (form) called upadhi. Until that time, everybody recognized God as formless and nobody was prepared to accept this new idea. In the Gita also, it is said, "Omiti ekaksharam Brahma", meaning that the name of the Supreme is Om, which contains only one syllable (8/12). This sound Om heard during samadhi was called by all the seers nada-Brahma a very great noise), but not a noise that is normally beyond a specific amplitude and limits of decibels suited to human hearing. Hence the rishis called this sound Udgith musical sound of the above, i.e., heaven. They also noticed that the infinite mass of galaxies moving with a velocity of 20,000 miles/second was generating a kinetic energy= 1/2MV2 and this was balancing the total energy consumption of the cosmos. Hence they named it Pranavah, which means the body (vapu) or storehouse of energy (prana).

Tat savitur varenyam:
Tat that (God), savitur the sun (star), varenyam worthy of bowing or respect. Once the form of a person along with the name is known to us, we may locate the specific person. Hence the two titles (upadhi) provide the solid ground to identify the formless God, Vishvamitra suggested. He told us that we could know (realize) the unknowable formless God through the known factors, viz., sound Om and light of suns (stars).A mathematician can solve an equation x2+y2=4; if x=2; then y can be known and so on. An engineer can measure the width of a river even by standing at the riverbank just by drawing a triangle. So was the scientific method suggested by Vishvamitra in the mantra in the next portion as under

Bhargo devasya dheemahi:
Bhargo the light, devasya of the deity, dheemahi we should meditate. The Rishi instructs us to meditate upon the available form (light of suns) to discover the formless Creator (God). Also he wants us to do Japam of the word Om (this is understood in the Mantra) . This is how the sage wants us to proceed, but there is a great problem to realize it, as the human mind is so shaky and restless that without the grace of the Supreme (Brahma) it cannot be controlled. Hence Vishvamitra suggests the way to pray Him as under.
Dhiyo yo nah prachodayat:
Dhiyo (intellect), yo (who), nah (we all), prachodayat (guide to right Direction). O God! Deploy our intellect on the right path.

Full scientific interpretation of the Mantra:The earth (bhur), the planets (bhuvah), and the galaxies (swah) are moving at a very great velocity, the sound produced is Om, (the name of formless God.) That God (tat), who manifests Himself in the form of light of suns (savitur) is worthy of bowing / respect (varenyam). We all, therefore, should meditate (dheemahi) upon the light (bhargo) of that deity (devasya) and also do chanting of Om. May He (yo) guide in right direction (prachodayat) our (nah) intellect dhiyo.

So we notice that the important points hinted in the mantra are:-
1) The total kinetic energy generated by the movement galaxies acts as an umbrella and balances the total energy consumption of the cosmos. Hence it was named as the Pranavah (body of energy). This is equal to 1/2 mv2 (Mass of galaxies x velocity)

2) Realizing the great importance of the syllable OM, the other later date religions adopted this word with a slight change in accent, viz., amen and Ameen.

3) The God could be realized through the saguna (gross), upasana (method), i.e., (a) by chanting the name of the supreme as OM and (b) by meditating upon the light emitted by stars (suns).

Sai Baba Leelas

Let me share with you one of the leelas of Sri Sai Baba of Shiridi which was been send to me by Sri G.P.Sinha .Blessed are the people who witness His leelas.The message is as follows;

Dear Suja,
Here's a leela of Baba which I intend sharing with the world at large through your blog and the various groups you you participate in.
The purpose of sharing the leela is to re-inforce Shraddha, Saburi and the importance of Sri SaiSatcharitra reading.
My cousin sister, Pallavi, who is like my daughter, is married to Sri Jatin. They got married about 5 years ago and have a 2 years old daughter.

Jatin had developed severe pain in his left knee in July 2008. All sorts of tests were conducted but could not prove anything. Later MRI and biopsy was conducted which proved that he was suffering fromOstero Sarcoma of the left knee.

In simple English its cancer on the left knee.Various doctors gave various opinions and a treatment of chemotherapy was drawn. One can imagine what would have been the atmosphere at home.Everyone was shattered.

Like most Mumbaites, Jatin was also aware of Baba and had visited Shirdi too but he wasn't a real devotee of Baba. I was luckily then in Mumbai so I went to visit Jatin after a prayer to Baba. There after meeting I announced to him that Baba is his in-charge and I asked him to have the sacred udi and the holy abhishek jal from Panvel darbar. Also I asked him to read Sri Sai Satcharitra everyday. I sent him the udi, the abhishek jal and a copy of Sri Sai Satcharitra along with a framed picture of Baba which was taken after we had made offering of a poshak to Baba in Shirdi in Novemeber 2007.
To read that visit this link

To Down load this Rare picture click here
I have always maintained that this picture of Baba is rare with that unique smile on his face. I had shared this picture and a small write up on Manisha's blog on 31 December 2008.
I prayed to Baba again and again and said, " Baba, I have assured Jatin and Pallavi on your behalf, please help them" Baba kept His words...read on..... The treatment began and Jatin started following my instructions.
Since Jatin had progressed two steps towards Baba with complete Shraddha and Saburi, Baba moved many more steps closer to Jatin.

Now the leelas of Baba begin. Jatin in his dream gets Baba's darshan and the usual conversation of a personal suffering with his God takes place. Baba why me? What have I done to deserve this life threatening disease? Baba with love in his eyes and voice replies," Its all due to your karma of the past life. Do you want to see what you had done and why are you suffering now?" And then Baba unfolds some of the deeds on Jatin's past life. Jatin says to Baba that he can not recall any of those acts of his but now what to do?

Baba replies, " You are under my care, so why worry?"

Mark those words of Baba. Couple of days later, Jatin had the second dream in which he is sitting at Baba's feet.Baba asks Jatin to stand up and go along with him for His round of bhiksha. I think this is one of the rarest thing to happen.

During Baba's days till 1918, Baba had asked only two devotees to go for Bhiksha round on behalf of Him. Baba and Jatin set off for seeking bhiksha and once they are through with two devotees, Jatin says, " Baba, we have now got enough for both of us, whay ask for more?" Baba replies rather angirly, " I know what I am doing, you just follow me". They then go to few more houses and collect lot of food.

Thereafter they return to Dwarkamai. Soon after that few bullock carts loads of people arrive for Baba's darshan. Baba asks all of them to eat and looks at Jatin smilingly.

Yes He knows everything and cares for everyone. Jatin bowed to Baba's lotus feet.By this time two rounds of chemotherapy were through and Jatin was beginning to get weak. he continued taking udi and the holy water from Panvel.

Although, not a routine, the doctors suggested to do another round of MRI and biopsy on Jatin's knee. The doctors were completely puzzled and surprised with the results. There was no infection. The doctors had never expected such results and they frankly could not explain such fast progress.

How could they? Where science stops, faith begins and we become one with Him. The doctors as per their books have continued further treatment. Baba and Jatin have continued their dialogue. Just two days back, Jatin was again admitted again for a check up with high fever. He told the doctors not to worry with medication as he has Baba's udi and the abhishek jal. He took both and the fever vanished after some time. In the early hours of morning when he was fast asleep, Baba again appeared in his dream. Jatin asks Baba, " Baba I have only half an hour before the hospital staff comes and collects my blood sample, can I please have a divine experience?" Baba says, "why not and disappears". Jatin begins to search Him and finds himself in a bylane in Shirdi. The bylane leads to Dwarkamai. Jatin reaches there and finds Baba sitting at his usual place opposite the Dhunimai. Jatin asks Him, where did He disappear?

Baba replies, "I have look after others as well and I was required here".Jatin then asks Him if he could sleep in His lap. Baba replies, that is the purpose of my lap, all are welcome to rest here. Come and get some sleep" Jatin said as soon as he put his head on Baba's lap, he went into a blissful state which he could not describe.

I think it was the state of Samadhi. he continued to feel the bliss and became aware that he was in his hospital bed with Baba stroking his head. In that state the hospital staff appeared. Jatin says he did not open his eyes he did not want this state of samadhi to get over. He offered his hand for taking the blood sample.

As soon as 30 minutes got over, the dream ended but that blissful state lasted for hours. Baba has not only kept His words to me and Jatin, he has once again shown us the path of complete Shraddha and Saburi. Jatin's complete surrender to Baba and his Faith in Him has brought these happy moments in their life.

When we all break down and think of the end of the world whenever we hear about such problems, Jatin and Pallavi have shown us the right way of Bhakti.I am at a loss of words to express my gratitude to Baba for showing me the way.

Sri Satchidanand Sadguru Sainath Maharaj ki Jai.

I am 55.Separated from my family, children are angry with me, dont know how to support them, all old friends have deserted me, I am all alone. Today been harrassed by so many creditors, for whom I do not have an answer.I have been only clinging onto Baba, and none other than him, reading Sai Satcharita daily, somedays Chapter 11 and 15, given up eating plantains, which was a must for me every night.Almost close to suicide, dont know when my sins of the past and present karma will be washed away. Keep telling myself as per Baba's advise, live it out and finish the karma once since for all.My Faith in Baba hasnt diminished, in fact its increasing daily, for he is the only one I have, I keep begging to him to forgive me, have mercy on me, save me, shower his blessings on me, but he is still testing my Patience, which my creditors do not understand. I am just hitting against a blind wall at the end of the day. This makesx me probe to know Baba, better, thats when I stumble on you Sir,Please pray for me. I am like an ICU patient, please tell Baba on my behalf.Unfortunately I cannot afford to make an ISD call to you at the moment, otherwise I would have called to pour out my heart to you.

Let us all pray for him in such a situvation.we cannot do anything personally atleast pray for him to overcome his difficulties

Attukal devi

My experience with Attukalamma

Hi all.
Happy Attukal pongala to all of u.

I just want to share my experience with Attukalamma.

I used to stay in Elamadu Kollam district. Every year all of my relatives go for Attukal pongala. In 2005 I was in Kerala and was eager to attend the pongala for the first time. We started at around 4.30 am and reached Trivandrum by 7 a.m. we usually place pongala near the power house so that we can come back without getting into traffic block. Attukal pongala starts at 11 am that day. We had lot of time. So we went to Lord padmanabhaswamy temple but at that time it was closed for the next pooja. So we thought of going to Attukal. we broke a coconut at pavizham gadi ganapathy temple and started to attukal. everyone had a doubt whether we will be able to reach to power house before 11 am. Due to heavy rush. We made a start and reached Attukal temple around 9.3o. We have to walk more than one hour to reach temple.
People who know about pongala know that vehicle will not be allowed after some distance. It was so rush that after standing upto 10 clock most of my relatives left us and went off. Fearing that they will not able to reach the place where they usually put pongala. My cousins and I were about to enter into temple that security told us to go back.
All of us felt very bad as all other relatives are gone and though we stood not listening to them having faith in her are not able to get darshan. I made my mind and said to others that we are going to have her darshan and go. We all prayed to her. Suddenly there was a push from back and security couldn’t do anything and we entered in to temple. We could get her prasadam also. The time was now around 10.15 in the rush we missed our elderly person who knows the way back to power house. Again we prayed to Attukal amma and started back only 45 min was left and we started running otherwise impossible to reach power house in time.
We took help of police people who told us the way to power house. By the time it was to light fire for pongala we reached the place. We thanked her for that. When we went to temple we took more than 1 ½ hr to reach the temple and we were back in 45 min. it was just because of her grace who gave strength in our legs to walk so fast.I have put pongala and was waiting for the priest who sprinkles holy water on that. Suddenly I saw a person walking towards me .he was none other than Nitish Bharadwaj the famous actor who played character of Lord Krishna in mahabharat. In ‘surprise couldn’t even remember his name and said Krishna looking at him. He came near my pongala pot and asked me whether he can mix the contents in the pongala .I said sure to him and he asked me about details. Then along with my relatives we had a photo section .he told me to stand near by, but I denied as I was looking like a hell after running so far. All of my relatives were ready for that and I stood along with them. Next day it was published in the paper .even till now some of my relatives keep the paper cutting along with them. I went to Attukal for first time had strange experiences and became famous too.

Let her blessings be always with u all

If u all have any experiences concerned with deities in any form pls do mail me.let us share with others.u can mail me at:vspmlsk@yahoo.co.in

Attukal devi

Attukal Bhagawathy:
Attukal temple (Malayalam:ആറ്റുകാല്‍ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം) is a shrine in kerala, india. The temple, has gained international attention since it was listed by the gunnies book of records as "the largest gathering of women in the world". The record was based on the number of piligrims .on 23 February 1997, when 1.5 million assembled to offer pongala to Attukal Devi. The temple is also known as `women's Sabarimala' as only women are allowed to perform the ritual in the Malayalam month of Kumbbham, which mostly coincides with March in the Western .
Mythological Background :
The story goes that the Goddess Bhagavathy revealed herself to a fervent devotee of a notable family viz. Mulluveettil family. It is said that one evening a young girl appeared before the head of the family while he was performing his oblations in the Killi river and requested him to help her cross the river. Impressed by her charismatic demeanor, the- old man bent before her with awe and reverence and not only helped her cross the river but took her to his house nearby. Strangely enough, while the household members were amidst preparations for intending a warm welcome to the young girl, she vanished. That very night the Goddess Bhagavathy appeared as an icon before the old man in his dream and demanded that he should establish an abode for her in the nearby sacred ground of shrubs and herbs (kavu), at a consecrated spot marked by three lines. The next morning the old man went to the spot revealed to him in the dream and to his great surprise he did find three marks indented on the ground. He lost no time in erecting a temple on this consecrated spot to house the Goddess. Many years later, the building was renovated by the local devotees. They also installed a beautiful and majestic icon of the Deity with four arms, bearing weapons of destruction in each, like spear, sword, skull, shield etc. The consecration ceremony of this Exalted Being was performed by no less a person than the high priest of the Badarinath Temple.

The Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, one of the ancient temples of South India, is popularly described as Sabarimala of the Women, as women form the major portion of devotees. The Goddess in the temple of Attukal is worshipped as the Supreme Mother, creator of all living beings and the mighty preserver as well as destroyer of them all. The pilgrims from all over the country, who visit Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple and worship the Lord, do not consider their visits complete without the visit to the shrine of the supreme Mother Attukalamma. Vishnumaya took the incarnation of Bhagavathy to annihilate the evil and protect the good in the world in the present Era namely Kaliyuga.

According to mythology, Attukal Bhagavathy is supposed to be the divinised form of Kannaki, the famous heroine of Chilapathikaram, written by Elenkovadikal, the Tamil Poet. The story goes that after the destruction of ancient city of Madurai, Kannaki left the city and reached Kerala via Kanyakumari and on the way to Kodungalloor took a sojourn at Attukal. Kannaki is supposed to be the incarnation of Parvathy, the consort of Paramasiva. The all powerful and benign Attukal Bhagavathy reigns eternally supreme at Attukal and nurses devotees as a mother does her children. Thousands of devotees from far and near flock to the Temple to bend before the Goddess with awe and reverence to prostrate and redress their affliction and agony.

Aesthetics of Architecture :
Anyone visiting the Attukal temple is first struck by the beauty and charm of the temple architecture. The temple structure is a harmonious conglomeration of both Kerala and Tamil styles of architecture. The beautifully carved figures of Mahishasuramarddini, Goddess Kali, Rajarajeswari, Sree Parvathy with Lord Paramasiva and various other depictions of the Goddess in and around the temple are undoubtedly the work of a gifted artist. Equally well presented around the corridors surrounding the temple, are the depiction of various other Gods and the epic stories of the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu viz., the "Desavathara". On either side of the elegant front gopura - are the icons based on the story of Goddess Kannaki.
Pongala mahotsavam:
The Pongala Mahotsavam is the most important festival of Attukal Bhagavathy Temple. The offering of Pongala is a special temple practice prevalent in the southern part of Kerala some
parts of Tamilnadu. It is a ten-day programme commencing on the Karthika star of the Malayalam month of Makaram-Kumbham (February-March) and closing with the sacrificial offering known as Kuruthitharpanam at night. On the ninth day of the festival the world famous Attukal Pongala Mahotsavam takes place. The entire area of about 5 kilometre radius around temple with premises of houses of people of all caste, creed and religion, open fields, roads, commercial institutions, premises of Government offices etc. emerges as a consecrated ground for observing Pongala rituals for lakhs of women devotees assembling from different parts of Kerala and outside. The famous Attukal Ponkala -instant cooking of rice with jaggery & coconut in temple is celebrated on the ninth day of the festival, the day of the confluence of the star Pooram and Pournami (Full Moon Night.). Every inch of temple including roads, courtyards of houses etc. become sites of Ponkala cooking on that day. Around 11 am the Priest lights the hearth in front of the temple amidst fire works and beating of chenda. This is then passed on from one woman to the other who light their hearth and prepare "Neivedyam". At about 4 pm on that day, Priests come out of the temple carrying holy water which marks the finale of the Ponkala and the devotees return home with happiness and satisfaction in their mind and after making an appeal to the Goddess for Her permission to participate in next year's Ponkala.

During the festival nearly five kilometres around the temple become covered with smoke from the 'aduppu's (temporary hearths made of 3 to 9 bricks). A holiday is declared in the city on that day. Tourists from other countries also participate in the Attukal Pongala.
The ceremony is exclusively confined to women folk and the enormous crowd, which gathers in Thiruvananthapuram on this auspicious day is reminiscent of the Kumbhamela Festival of North India.

Kuthiyottam and Thalappoli:
Kuthiyottam performed by boys and Thalappoli by girls are two popular rituals made on the Ponkala day. A stream of young girls dressed in traditional attire holding Thalappoli starts very early in the morning with the hope that the Goddess almighty would be pleased to bestow on them beauty inward and outward, health, wealth and happiness. Boys below the age of 13 years make the offering of Kuthiyottam. These young boys represent the wounded soldiers of the Goddess Mahishasura Marddini. On the third day of the festival these young boys receive the prasadam (offering) from the temple priest and start a seven day penance to purify their body and mind. For the purpose they have to pass through rigorous physical and mental discipline such as sleeping on the floor, observing strict diet restrictions, staying in the temple etc. Besides these, the boys have to undergo such disciplines like prostrating 1008 times before the deity after their morning and evening oblations.

The Divine Procession:
No sooner are the boys adorned for accompanying the Deity than the grand procession begins. The procession with illumination, floats and colourful festoons on either side of the road generate a gala atmosphere. This is made more attractive with various art forms like peacock dance, poykuthira dance, kolkali, theyyam, kumbhadance, display of other art forms which are followed by kuthiyottam, panchavadyam. Lastly a sight to behold is, the magnificent procession of Attukal Bhagavathy on the caparisoned elephant displaying with Alavattom and Venchamaram under the resounding echo of occasional gun shots. Enroute it is a splendid sight to see the devotees who assemble on either side of the road welcoming the goddess in reverence with different kinds of offerings in salvers and "vaykurava". The procession starting from Attukal temple reaches the Sastha Temple at Manacaud in the small hours of the morning and after the necessary pooja ceremonies performed there, the entourage returns to Attukal. Thereafter, the deity is received back in the sanctum with Deeparadhana. Soon after the Deeparadhana, the 'boys are delivered of the penance in an orderly manner. At night, rendering of devotional songs takes place which is followed by the ceremonial removal of the "Kappu". The ten day festival Culminates with the sacrificial offering known as 'Kuruthi Tharpanam' at night.

The other festivals in this temple are:
